When you have a chronic cough or lung condition that means you produce a lot of mucus, you may be more susceptible to chest infections. This means it is very important to keep your lungs clear and decrease the risk of infections.

At Breathe Well Physiotherapy, we can teach you how to keep your lungs clear using a variety of different methods.

Breathing Pattern Re-education

Sometimes the natural rhythm of our breathing is disrupted, and the breathing pattern become less efficient than it could be. This is called Dysfunction Breathing or a Breathing Pattern Disorder.

Common symptoms include:

  • Difficulty taking a satisfying breath (“breath hunger”)

  • Frequent sighing and yawning

  • Tight chest

  • Breathing too fast (“hyperventilation”)

  • Shallow breathing

At Breathe Well Physiotherapy, we are experts in identifying and treating breathing pattern disorders. We can help ease your symptoms and teach you how to improve your breathing through a comprehensive assessment and individualised treatment program.

Long COVID Rehabilitation

What is Long COVID?

In 2020, a newly identified coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2 caused a worldwide pandemic of respiratory viral illness called COVID-19. Most people, recover quickly after a COVID-19 infection, however some experience persistent symptoms for weeks and months.

The term “long COVID” is generally used to describe people who are suffering from either “ongoing symptomatic COVID-19” (symptoms persisting from 4-12 weeks) or “post COVID-19 syndrome” (symptoms for 12 weeks or more). The symptoms can present differently in different people and can range from mild to severe.

Common long COVID symptoms:

  • Shortness of breath

  • Extreme fatigue (tiredness)

  • Problems with your memory and concentration (“brain fog”)

  • Headaches

  • Heart palpitations

  • Chest pains

  • Muscle aches

  • Gastrointestinal issues

  • Anxiety and depression

If you are worried about ongoing symptoms after a COVID-19 infection, you should contact your doctor for a medical review. They may order some tests to check for any other underlying problems.

Whilst COVID-19 is a multisystem illness, it is a virus that primarily affects the respiratory system. This is where a Respiratory Physiotherapist can help. At Breathe Well Physiotherapy we can assess your breathing and help develop a personalised recovery program.
